The idea at the start of the day was to record a tribute version of Sonny Rollins’ ‘East Broadway Rundown.,’ in my mind a classical masterpiece, a portrait of a city street, straight up and down….and then weird and squeaky.

There’s always lots of ideas flying around when I convene with Jim McHugh and the “Sunny boy” Sunwatchers of Brooklyn, NY, and the live radio version of the tune that ensued hung out in my digestive system.

The talented Polyp Septet goes beyond the Sunwatchers to factor in some of my favorite guest artists, some of whom speaking from beyond the grave. Walter Malli was the biggest fan of Sonny Rollins I knew of.
