In September 2022 drummer David Licht, key collaborator in Shockabilly and before that the Chadbournes, was part of a Klezmer group invited to perform at the annual Greensboro Folk Festival.

He reached out about adding a gig or two with me to bookend this trip. He was excited about coming back to his hometown, particularly because as he told me he has rarely been asked to come play in Greensboro. Bassist David Menestres was also keen on playing more with Licht; both had been part of the shifting line-ups at the 2022 Chadfest at the New School in New York.

These shows ended up happening at the Cats Cradle in Chapel Hill and Etc in Greensboro. The latter show was taped successfully by Menestres. The show took place in the venue’s backyard in Glenwood. For both shows the trio was joined by Licht’s bandmate Dan Blacksburg on trombone.

The trombone explains the presence of Rainy Day Women in the line up, I only play this song when a trombonist sits in. My last performance of this song was in the ‘90s at the Club Zwei venue in Munchen when trombonist Sebi Tramotana sat in with my duo with Paul Lovens, Me and Paul.

The set has been edited not in content but in the song running order to make a sequence I find more pleasing as a listener. It begins with New New War, the song I wrote following the original 9/11 attack. At the end of the set there is a bonus track of the original recording of this song and I have also included my satirical addendum to a warning letter sent out by the post office during this era, a personal favorite.

This is a decent archive recording. I can hear everything that was going on. It is not pristine and I am not crazy about the vocal sound but…..thanks everyone for participating! DOC CHAD
