Shockabilly meets the son of shockabilly

THE HALLOWEEN GIG AT ‘THE SHADE’ WAS THE BIGGEST PAYDAY A LOCAL BAND COULD EVER EXPECT IN GREENSBORO. “They walked

Out of there with four bills,” I’d been told circa the early ‘80s,

“they” being either the TORNADO combo or a blues band, The Alka=Phonics.  Yet in 1982 my CAMPAIGN OF PRESSURE SUCCEEDED AND I SCORED THE GIG AND PUT TOGETHER A SPECIAL COMBO

COMBINING TWO DIFFERENT YET OVERLAPPING TRIOS.  DRUMMER DAVID LICHT AND I WERE THE COMMON MEMBERS.

IN SHOCKABILLY OUR THIRD MEMBER WAS NEW TORK-BASED MARK KRAMER

ON CHEAP ORGAN AND TAPES. TO BE ABLE TO DO REGIONAL GIGS ,

ELECTRIC BASSIST TOM SHEPHARD AKA ‘SHEP THE HEP’ COMPLETED THE TRIO

WE CALLED SON OF SHOCKABILLY.  BOTH BANDS REHEARSED THE SAME REPERTOIRE,

FIENDISHLY.  IT WAS EXCITING COMBINING

IT ALL BUT THERE WAS A MAJOR DISTRACTION:

IT WAS THE YEAR OF THE

TYLENOL POISONINGS

AND SO\THE GIG WAS SPARSELY ATTENDED,

PEOPLE WERE AFRAID TO GO OUT!   ONLY A $250 TAKE…

.AND THIS RECORDING, WHICH DEPENDING ON THE VOLUME WE WE

PLAYED AT SOUNDS LIKE A COOL STUDIO MIX OR A

ROLL OF ROCKWOOL SOAKED IN LSD AND

DROPPED ON YOUR HEAD…..

FROM THE DAVID LICHT CASSETTE ARCHIVE, PRODUCED AND EDITED BY DOC CHAD
